  • The rate of sexual offences reported by police forces shows an upward trend over the decade (+78.1%). In 2020, the offence rate stood at 110 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
  • However, it was in the “Other sexual offences” category that we noted the most significant increase (+2.5%), with 119 more crimes recorded than in 2019.
  • “In nearly 9 cases out of 10, the person accused of committing the sexual assault is a boy or a man.” (INSPQ, 2022)
  • “Youth aged 15 to 24 are the age group with the largest proportion of sexual assault victims.” (INSPQ, 2022)
  • Minor victims have the highest rates. The 15- to 17-year-old group has a rate of 430.5 victims per 100,000 young people, and the 12- to 14-year-old group has a rate of 282.2. Rates of victims of other sexual offences are also highest among 12- to 14-year-olds (459.7) and 15- to 17-year-olds (228.3).

  • More than 8 out of 10 victims knew their attacker. (INSPQ, 2022)
  • Among those meeting the criteria for probable PTSD, sexual assault (14%) was the most frequently reported traumatic event.
  • The proportion of young adults (age 18 to 24) with probable PTSD is more than four times higher than that recorded among older people (age 65 and over).
